Down and out in Perthshire!!

According to a report issued by the office of national statistics, Perth and Kinross is ranked in the lowest 10 in terms of salaries received by residents.

Perth MSP Roseanna Cunningham said low wages were a “major problem” in Perthshire but fears commuters to the central belt are painting a distorted picture.

“This survey is based on the wages paid to people actually living and working in the area,” explained Ms Cunningham. “It strips out the distorting effect of wealthier retirees and those who commute to other areas to work and shows the true extent of low pay in rural Scotland.

“It confirms something I have been saying for some time, namely that low wage levels are a major problem in Perthshire.

This is exactly one of the points that Business Perthshire have been highlighting and that the councils spin that the area is a vibrant and successful one is a complete lie.

Parts of Perthshire have become popular with wealthier retired people and also for commuters who have well paid jobs in the cities but the reality is that that there is little in the way of good job prospects and very few well paid jobs to offer to people living and working in the area. This is hardly encouraging for our youngsters who have ambition and with little in the way of decent job prospects are likely to leave in droves and never return.

Thriving vibrant Perthshire - we think not!

SCOTLAND is drinking itself to death, leading doctors have warned!!

A recent report has shown the full extent of Scotlands booze problem and the impact it is having on the economy - a whopping £1.1billion as a whole including working days lost .

There has been a huge rise in alcohol related illness and in the number of people admitted to hospital as a result of this which is costing the NHS over £100million per year.

The number of Scots women drink driving has also soared by 43 per cent over the last five years

The number of killings in Scotland have also reached the highest level since the Dunblane massacre and it is undoubtedly in part due to the 'blade and booze' culture which is now a growing problem. In half the killings, the perpetrators were drunk.

Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson said "For too long, violence has been a fact of life - cutting short too many young lives and undermining our collective hopes to create a safer, stronger Scotland.

She also added that this problem was neither new nor unique to Scotland and that it was a harsh daily reality for too many people.

What's it really like to live in Perthshire, Scotland and is it really worth relocating your business to the Perthshire area? Well yes - but be careful to avoid one very ugly pitfall. Perthshire is a beautiful place to live if a little wet these days. We have met lots of friendly people who live in Perthshire and also work with some very talented and forward thinking companies. There are however a few that have not been so welcoming and who have clearly demonstrated their frustrations in having to compete with other businesses of a higher quality. This is a shame because small businesses only really benefit from one another by working together as a team, something the Perthshire Chamber of Commerce along with some of their inner circle members seem unable to grasp...Perthshire Chamber of Commerce do not want to help your business or assist you. What do you pay the membership fees for when everything else they offer also has to be paid for too? BEWARE THE PERTHSHIRE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE and enjoy working and living in wonderful Perthshire without them.

"The Six Cities of Scotland - Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness and Stirling are all modern, dynamic and thriving centres which encapsulate all that is best about Scotland as it moves into the new century."

Perthshire was once voted 'best place to live' and some local organisations still try and trade on that. Unfortunately, the area has now been left far behind thanks to the likes of Perth & Kinross Council and the Chamber of Commerce.

Despite the Scottish Executives policy of encouraging new talent to Scotland to address the shortfall in local available talent, Perthshire appears to have opted out of this scheme.

What a pity that an area of such outstanding natural beauty is run by a bunch of narrow minded, bigoted, backward individuals who show no signs of encouraging new talent and inward investment for future economic growth.

Local MSP Murdo Fraser, Conservative Candidates for Perth and North Perthshire Douglas Taylor, and for Ochil and South Perthshire Liz Smith, and Tory Group Leader on Perth and Kinross Council Cllr Alexander Stewart have today launched a bid to give Perth city status. Most people think Perth is already a city; however the truth is that Perth is only an ecclesiastical city, like Brechin and Elgin. Launching the Setting up the City bid, Mr Fraser said:

"Perth is in danger of being left behind. The six other Scottish cities are at the centre of Scottish economic development, and we need Perth to be part of the pack.

Over £90m has been allocated by the Scottish Executive to Scotlands cities through their documents Building Better Cities and Building a Better Scotland. Perth is getting none of this money.

The factors which are taken into account when a place is being considered for city status are its notable features, regional significance, historical consideration and its forward looking attitude. Perth is a place which has these qualities in abundance."

Mr Taylor added:

"If Perth was to be awarded city status, we would experience untold benefits which would pass down generations to come. Transport and infrastructure would receive greater attention. Our educational institutions would have a higher status, which would lead to a reduction in the skills gap, which Perth employers would welcome. More national events would come to Perth, as a city is more likely to have the capacity to cope with such things.

Perth has a wealth of treasures which deserve more recognition. We are famous for our Theatre, our Racecourse, and tourist attractions like Scone Palace. The Mod has been held here and we are home to T in the Park, Scotlands biggest music festival. We are a major centre for scientific research, and a popular venue for conferences and conventions. And Perth College is a fantastic institution which is teaching our youngsters the skills our economy needs to keep ticking over.

Perth deserves full recognition. Thats why Conservatives are Setting up the City."
