Don't fall into the trap that many of the businesses in Perthshire do in wanting cheap services with little thought to the quality. The council and the Chamber are the worst offenders and it backfires every time when they consistently produce some of the worst marketing materials we have ever seen.
The G8 publications are a good example and were a total embarrassment for the area. You can’t compete on a global stage with shoddy, amateurish marketing materials. It’s true that you get what you pay for and you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Better to produce less, but of a higher quality.
For a little extra you get a whole lot more.
When commissioning new marketing materials for your business such as brochures, logo design, web site choose experts. Desk top publishing is not graphic design. In increasingly competitive markets, it is important to establish a strong company (corporate) image or brand which will give potential new customers a true idea of what they are buying before they buy it which should make that decision easier to make for them. Existing customers trust strong brands because they know exactly what to expect and they will keep coming back to you.
It is important that you commission a professional designer to obtain good quality visual images - photographs and graphics, which will ensure that your marketing materials have maximum impact.
A graphic designer is someone who has studied a relevant subject, usually at a college or university and most will have work experience with an agency or design studio and be able to demonstrate their skills accordingly, whether it be in new media or print. Ask to see their portfolio. Buying a MAC and some software does not make you a graphic designer. Beware the monkey on the MAC!!

A web developer is a coder who understands programming language which is a skill usually acquired at university studying computer programming. A web developer does not download web templates, add an off the shelf database and then pass it off to the client as web development or their own work.
Look out too for companys offering content management systems (CMS). At first glance they may seem very good value costing in the region of £600 but when you add in training at over £300 pounds per day and a yearly hosting charge of £1200 the figures start to add up. A site can therefore cost thousands before you even begin. There are many templates that can be downloaded free or very cheaply from the internet that you can work with.
