Area’s internet bookings up 26%

THE INFORMATION technology revolution has brought about a substantial boost for Perthshire’s tourist industry.

For the first four months of 2006, compared to last year, online bookings taken for Perthshire have increased by 26%. Booking revenues jumped 42% in the same period.

Online interest has rocketed over the last 12 months, and local organisations are being urged to ensure they have a presence on the worldwide web.

Perthshire already enjoys global popularity, particularly among Americans.

However businesses in the area are being warned they could be left behind if they do not make use of all marketing opportunities.

Perth MSP Roseanna Cunningham said the internet is a critical weapon for tourism operators and welcomed a statement from visitscotland.com that flagged up a “significant increase” in online accommodation bookings for Perthshire in the first four months of 2006.

“The internet is becoming the first stop for a rapidly increasing number of people as they book holidays, short breaks and other trips,” the MSP remarked.

“It is extremely good news that Perthshire is winning a growing share of business through that route.

“These results also underline the importance for all tourism operators of ensuring they not only have an online presence, but one that is user-friendly.”

An ambitious blueprint to increase tourism throughout Perth and Kinross, recently agreed by councillors, stated use of the internet would help to ensure the area becomes “one of Europe’s best destinations.”

Tourism already brings in more than £450 million a year for the local economy.
